静止画像を包含する外部ファイルの説明とポインター。
備考
<graphic> に関連付けられた外部ファイルは、画像やイラストなどを保持し、通常はバイナリオブジェクトの形式です。<graphic> 要素の「中身」(存在する場合) はオブジェクト自体ではなく、単にオブジェクトに関する情報です。オブジェクトを含む外部ファイルは、@xlink:href 属性によって指定されます。

位置: @position 属性を使用して、この要素がテキスト内の正確な位置に固定する必要があるのか、浮動する可能性があるのかを示すことができますが、画像に関しては固定することをお勧めします。図、表などの内部のすべての画像も固定されている必要があります。ただし外側の構造体 (図、囲み文字）は浮動できます。
使用法: <caption> などの表示に用いる要素は、常に可能な限り高いレベルで使用する必要があります。つまり、<graphic> 要素が <fig> 要素内にある場合、<caption>、<long-desc> などは、<fig> に含める必要があり、<graphic> 要素に入れてはいけません。<caption> 要素 (および類似の表示用要素) を <graphic> に含めるのは、その画像オブジェクトが他の構造体に含まれていない場合、またはある図が複数の画像を含んでおり、それぞれが独自の <caption> を持つ場合に限られます。同様の理由から、@position 属性は、より大きな表示用コンテナに含まれる <graphic> 要素 (たとえば <fig> の中の) では固定とする必要があります。
